Have You?

Been watching any of the World Cup Games? Do you know that it is the most watched sporting event in the world? Bigger than Superbowl and NASCAR…seriously!

Food and Wine has come up with 32 Official(ish) Drinks for every country playing in the World Cup… and a few countries have been elimanated already.

See the first round is what they call group play and the team that comes out with the most points in each group after these first 3 games is the winner and they get to move on. Today the US plays their second game and they pulled the card to enter what they call “The Group of Death” or the most difficult opponents.

After group play is completed, it becomes a one and done tournament until there’s a winner! Last time the world champion was Spain, and since they have already been eliminated…they won’t be repeating.

My love for the World Cup Soccer came from working in the restaurant days as all of the guys were avid about the games. I took the time to ask questions and learn, so that we could talk about the plays, the players and much more. Now I still follow it, maybe not as much, but I still do. And I just might find myself down in Little Italy watching one of the games as the World Cup preogresses. Nothing like being there to view the enthusiasm!

So lets root the USA as they take on Portugal. When the World Cup was held in Los Angeles area, I did go to a few games. Nothing like it!

Make sure that you check out the Google Doodles as not only do they change everyday depending on who’s playing… they are animated!

And until next time…keep on stitching

In between this, there is time for taking pictures of my stitching adventures, Facebook and writing stitch guides for canvas that I am stitching for Needle Deeva, Maggie, Ruth Schmuff and others. Mostly needlepoint you ask? well we will talk about my cats Sylvester and AlleyCat, better known as "the brat". Of course I can't forget Felix who was the love of my life for over 14 years. He broke my heart as he departed for the Rainbow Bridge last year. Oh did I mention baseball?

  1. I’m watching the World Cup for as long as I can stay awake! Since I’m in South Africa, I find some matches start at or close to midnight and I usually crash at ten.

But in 2010 we hosted it! And I went to one game with my daughter – the only one we could get tickets for. It was huge fun – USA versus Algeria. Quite a good game, but the crowd was the real star. Such nice people, and no aggro at all. The American fans came dressed to kill – one very tall, thin man decided to be Uncle Sam and wore a suit that was, I think, a recycled child’s duvet – well-washed cotton, brightly patterned in the Stars and Stripes. Also a stripey-starry top hat and a delightfully fake beard. He was a joy. After the game, fans from both sides made a point of greeting each other, shaking hands, slapping shoulders, being nice. I loved it.

All the best, and thanks for your blog – it always makes my day.

    Deborah, in winter

    • ooh thank you Deborah! yes I remember it was in South Africa last time! Sometimes the fans are the best part of the game… and I can’t believe that Spain and Italy are out already. Thanks again for your comments as those make my day!
