A Bird’s Eye View

I thought it was time to give the Rainbow Birds their eyes. It seems that they were so anxious to be stitched that they left the painters table before they were totally finished being painted! I looked and looked at these eyes for the longest time knowing that something wasn’t right and finally realized what it was. I went to Danji website and found Rainbow Birds there and used the picture for a reference.

For such a small section of the canvas, I really spent allot of time on the eyes. Selecting colors 002, 002C, 005, 005C 032, 033, 051HL, 205C and wow is that allot of colors! I did try some green, but I didn’t like that, so out it came. I am looking at the picture now and I am not too happy with the iris on bird #3, so may have to do some restitching on that area. After all that hard work, I needed something more relaxing and stitched on leaves for awhile. I agonized so over finding just the right greens for those leaves and I did try every thread line that I could get my hands on. I remembered that I had bought these greens at Mindy’s Needlepoint Factory just because and when I went for them, I was thrilled that these Planet Earth greens were just what I wanted!

I think that Sylvester had just a little too much catnip yesterday as he started attacking the Rainbow Birds! He was quite amusing as he offered up some afternoon entertainment for me! and until next time…keep on stitching

About Vicky

Needlepoint, morning noon and evening! what could be better than this? I work on the computer in the daylight hours editing stitch guides and drawing stitches that you will see in the next Needlepoint Now for your stitching pleasure! In between this, there is time for taking pictures of my stitching adventures, Facebook and writing stitch guides for canvas that I am stitching for Needle Deeva, Maggie, Ruth Schmuff and others. Mostly needlepoint you ask? well we will talk about my cats Sylvester and AlleyCat, better known as "the brat". Of course I can't forget Felix who was the love of my life for over 14 years. He broke my heart as he departed for the Rainbow Bridge last year. Oh did I mention baseball?

  1. Vicky, a suggestion for the eyes to make them look a bit more realistic and rounded. Grab some Bijoux in that dark blue and stitch a sort of ray stitch out from the center of the iris on the eye to give the iris more of a rounded look. One strand should do it and stitch it over the tent. It will round out the iris and I bet will do the trick. I also noticed the gold in the center varies a lot in size from bird to bird. Maybe if they were more uniform and the iris larger?

Looking great so far. And you need to get a real bird for Sylvester.
