I always knew that flowers had a meaning such as roses for love, but never did I realize what a special language that they really do speak! where the individual colors of roses each mean a different type of love and all types of flowers, greens and herbs each have their very own identity.
Yes I know that I should have been home last night stitching away, but something else was tugging at me. There was a book signing with the author of “The Language of Flowers” at Adelaide’s in conjunction with Warwick’s, two of my most favorite shops anywhere! Adelaide’s is the most amazing shop of plants, flowers, orchids, gifts and inspiration that as when you walk in, all your cares in the world just escape you. Warwick’s is an independent bookstore nestled in with the best greeting cards, gifts, pens, jewelry, art & office supplies and all that kind of must have stuff.
In a way I could look at it that I was just doing research for my stitching. Now in case you are thinking that I am stretching this a bit, just think of how many floral canvases that you have stitched? Recreate in your mind all of those beautiful canvases that you have seen and fallen in love with that have flowers as the focal point? or canvases that you have stitched with big beautiful flowers, greens, fruits, vegetables and herbs? Now I know that all my orchids speak a language of “refined beauty”.
It was a wonderful evening as we listened to the author, Vanessa Diffenbaugh speak of her book and her passions of the language of flowers that are intertwined in this novel about the life of a young lady. I am looking forward to really getting into this book. I read a few chapters last night until my eyes got too sleepy and I know that I am just going to love it!
This was Vanessa signing our books after her speaking, reading and graciously answering many questions. She is nestled in among the beautiful orchid display at Adelaide’s. In case you are wondering, yes the orchids were calling out to me. There was a new coloration that just came in that the girls had to show me! They quickly whisked me in the back so I could admire its beauty and yes it is coming home with me…but I will go back next week and pick it up.
Today will be a busy day as I finish up one more project for the next issue of Needlepoint Now for your stitching pleasure. It is a Shelley canvas and ooh so cute! Some time for stitching and I also need to get ready for my weekend trip to A Stitch in Time and classes with Brenda Hart. I so look forward to my time with Brenda as she so inspires me and always challenges me. I probably won’t see you for a few days depending when I have time and a connection.
The kids have lots of choices for their little cat naps these days! and until next time…keep on stitching
Glad you had fun. Don;t forget to post a picture of the new orchid. Sylvester seems to like bags more than boxes, doesn’t he?
Look at those long arms on Sylvester, so cute! Sounds like a fantastic evening Vicky. Don’t worry, it does count as research– that’s the beauty of our profession! 😉
Thanks Ada! he very rarely sits like that and I thought he was posing for the camera!
Forgot to say, both of those shops sound fantastic, wish I had something like that here where I live!
Great reason for a visit one of these days!
I so enjoy your blog each morning. You and Jane keep us all informed.
I was in San Marino and Pasadena last weekend. Went to New reations to get a ouple of things my Mom had stitched and know they are going to do a wonderful job. Decided to go to A Stitch in Time…hadn’t been there in years. Used to go there to take classes with Bev Churchfield when Doris had the shop. Saw some lovely canvases and the Halloween deorations were wonderful. Know I will be returning. Have a fun weekend with Brenda. Hope to take a class with Brenda someday but until then I will watch your reations ome to life.
Thanks Sue! hope to able to get to see you one of these days.
Sounds like a great evening, Vicky. I adore Warwicks (one can get into lots of trouble there). Enjoy your weekend with Brenda. I am off to Nimble Needle in NJ tomorrow to share a day with Sharon Garmize in a canvas embellishment class. Should be lots of fun. Cinnamon buns are rising now for the road trip & the class. A girl’s gotta have a little sustenance to get through the day. Give Brenda my best. Can’t wait to see what wonderful things you two cook up.
